Description:
Founded in 1867, The Canadian Medical Association is a national, voluntary association of physicians that advocates on behalf of its members and the public for access to high quality health care, and provides leadership and guidance to physicians.
The Health Care Transformation in Canada website disseminates information that was gathered by talking with Canadian patients, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. The goal is to see Canada have the world’s best health and health care system by 2025 by leveraging a collective mindset and pressing political leaders at both the federal and provincial levels for health care transformation.
Tasks:
- Designed, developed and unit tested a new responsive, mobile ready and bilingual Wordpress theme (CMA HCT) based on a prototype PSD graphics file and the Twenty Eleven Wordpress theme.
- Developed two, widget ready plug-ins (CMA HCT Home and CMA HCT Column Generator) that allowed administrators to manipulate home page content, as well as, the type and placement of post categories.
- Developed a method to automatically enlarge a posts column on the home page when a user clicked on the posts column header, all other posts columns were shrunk. Some elements of the posts column were made visible or hidden depending on the view state of the posts column. The effect allowed users to view a more detailed version of a posts column without having to be redirected to a new page.
- Developed a responsive layout that could easily be viewed in any browser type including desktop, tablet and smart phone. Some elements of the website were morphed using CSS Media Queries and jQuery when the width of the website was reduced to tablet or smart phone form factors.
- Integrated the Flexslider plug-in into the home page, administrators can manipulate the slides for the slideshow with the aid of the Wordpress Media Library and the Flexslider plug-in settings
- Integrated the Shadowbox JS plug-in into the home page. A thumbnail of the Youtube video identified in the CMA HCT Home plug-in was extracted using the Youtube API and placed on the home page as a link. When the video thumbnail was clicked the Youtube video would automatically start playing in a Shadowbox JS lightbox. Mobile users were automatically detected and redirected to the Youtube website to allow for easy mobile viewing of the Youtube video
- Implemented a multi language support plug-in called qTranslate allowing visitors to view the website in either English or French.
- Implemented the Codestyling Localization plug-in which allows administrators to freely manage, edit and modify Wordpress language translation files (po and mo). Created, modified and integrated a custom Wordpress language translation file specifically for the CMA HCT Wordpress theme.
- Integrated two navigation plug-ins (Breadcrumb NavXT, WP-Paginate) to provide more advanced methods of traversing the website pages and posts hierarchy
- Integrated the AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget into the website allowing visitors to “like” individual posts to common social networking platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and others.
